Recap of the Inagural Sod Bowl

Some of you may recall that we here at Sod had the great pleasure to host a college football bowl game, a great step forward for our fledgling blog. We were understandably excited to join the likes of Papajohns.com, Insight.com and Brut in sponsoring a bowl game to gain further exposure for ourselves.

Unfortunately, being simple bloggers, we didn’t understand that much planning and preparation would have to go into getting ready for the SodBlog.com Bowl. In particular, we:

• Failed to actually contact the two teams we chose at random to play

• Did not contact Century High School about procuring the use of their football field for the game

• Never called ESPN to make sure we could get a broadcast team on-site to call the game (although Lou
Holtz and Mark May showed up, anyway, which was odd and awkward)

• Didn’t actually print up tickets or have commemorative t-shirts made

All in all, it was a total disaster, football-wise. We apparently just thought that announcing a bowl game was all that we had to do and that all of the details would be taken care of by…other people. We did end up having a kick-ass tailgate party, which was a plus. A few members of the Sod staff were forced to let Lou Holtz and Mark May crash at their apartments, which, again, was very awkward.

Reportedly, Colin Cowherd of ESPN Radio has called our attempt at a bowl game “The best thing to happen to North Dakota since Jimmy Kleinsasser was born.” and Peter King of Sports Illustrated has claimed to have had conversations with each and every one of us and was reportedly very impressed with Bismarck’s various Starbucks locations.* So, I guess it wasn’t a total failure.

We’re going to do the best to put this event behind us and will start working thinking long and hard about securing one of the regional rounds of the NCAA College Basketball Tournament in March. We’ll be sure to keep you posted.

*As with much of the content of this site, this whole thing is a joke. We didn’t actually talk to Peter King. We’re not that desperate for attention. Also, Colin Cowherd did not say that on his radio show. In fact, he doesn’t even know that North Dakota is a real state and for all intents and purposes believes that Jim Kleinsasser is actually an Ogre.

Nate is pretty sure Mark Twain said it best, "Humor is the great thing, the saving thing after all. The minute it crops up, all our hardnesses yield, all our irritations, and resentments flit away, and a sunny spirit takes their place."
