Sarah Palin - Trophy Pick

Sarah Palin - Trophy Pick

So, John McCain has picked his VP. I can’t say that it’s the best pick or even a reasonable pick. In fact, it’s a straight up shot at the woman vote and little else. Sure, Sara Palin is a strong woman, but she’s very inexperienced in politics, serving as the mayor of a 8000 person town before becoming governor of Alaska (an office which she’s held for only two years). She’s a hockey mom and a NRA member. She’s also a former beauty queen.

Let’s see…relative lack of experience-check, drives minivan or other large hockey/soccer mom vehicle-check, shoots guns-check, former beauty queen-check. Yup, she’s a republican’s wet dream. Well, she’s a non-closet homosexual republican’s wet dream. If McCain really wanted to get that closeted republican/conservative/evangelical vote, he would have chosen Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, he’s cute!

But back to Mrs. Palin. Honestly, what does McCain think she’s going to bring to the ticket aside from capturing the sentimental vote of women and the mysoginist vote of men? Picking her essentially clears up any attacks on Obama’s experience and bascially dooms this woman to getting destroyed by Joe Biden in every debate, policy-wise. I’m certainly no sexist, but there is no way that anyone with two years of experiecne in state politics knows more about foreign or even domestic issues than a 65 year old who has been an elected official since he was 30 and has held seats on various important committees over the years.

I hate to say it, but this pick is pretty transparent for McCain. Follow me for a second. His first wife was a swimsuit model, his second wife was a beauty queen and now he picks a VP who was a beauty queen? Seems to be a pattern there, doesn’t there? Seems like John McCain, after a life of marrying trophy wives, has himself a trophy pick for VP. It’s a damn shame that he couldn’t reach beyond his stereotype.

Please don’t get me wrong, I’m completely sure that Sarah Palin is a very intelligent, capable woman. I mean, she’s a governor, so she’s obviously no idiot. But this is simply a transparent grab at the woman vote, as well as finding a youthful, vibrant counterpart to the cancer-scarred, broken-down old man that is John McCain. It’s a fucking shame.

Nate is pretty sure Mark Twain said it best, "Humor is the great thing, the saving thing after all. The minute it crops up, all our hardnesses yield, all our irritations, and resentments flit away, and a sunny spirit takes their place."

  1. She is the number one on Google trends. I have been trying to find some keywords to write on my blog before and this morning I have check on the site and found his name on number 1 position. I’m just hoping that she would eventually help me climb up.

Sarah Palin has one of the prettiest faces among the government.

  2. Well said, Nater-tot… well said. Not sure what Postman is smoking, but I want some.

As a point of reference, this is how the McCain spin machine is playing it (via an email newsletter i received this morning):

Sarah Palin is a trailblazer and a reformer. As the first female governor of Alaska, she challenged a corrupt system and has been a tireless advocate for reform - passing a landmark bill on ethics reform. She has taken on the old politics in Alaska and reformed the state’s energy industry. She rejects wasteful pork barrel spending. She’s fearless - exactly the type of leader I want at my side and the type of leadership we will bring to Washington.

My friends, together Sarah Palin and I make the strongest presidential ticket and I know that she joins me in asking for your support as we head into our Convention week in Minnesota. We’re shaking things up in this campaign - and Governor Palin and I are ready to bring real reform to Washington.

  3. I pretty much have to agree with your take of Palin for the VP position. However, what is being missed in all the debates and attacks is the fact that we now have some history in the making. If Obama wins, he becomes the first black president of the US. If McCain wins, Palin is just one step away from the presidency. Toss aside all of the political rhetoric and look at this from a historical viewpoint and it shows how far the country has come in race and gender relations. That’s not to say everything is perfect, because that is far from the truth, but it does show we, as a country, are making progress.

  4. I’m calling it, when Obama gets elected, which he will, the first thing that old fart will say will be along the lines of “The people of America only voted for him because he was black.”

You heard it from me, and I’ve got a $100 bet on it.

  5. The Maverick and the MILF in ‘08!

  6. I totally agree with you, Nate. Obama and Biden must be dancing with glee! I find the whole deal insulting to women actually. McCain’s assumed we’ve not got the brains to figure out that’s why he chose her, to appeal to us. Call me old fashioned, but I like to vote for someone’s political stance, not their gender (nor race for that matter). What scares me is that there really are some women out there that could vote for her simply because she’s a woman. They must be confident of that to have chosen her.

She shouldn’t even have been in the running for that kind of high level position, never mind selected. Can’t wait to hear her foreign policy views….ha! And did you read about her allegedly trying to get her sister’s ex fired on the sly from the police dept. ? Hmmm, that’ll be interesting to see how the current investigation into that event turns out and whether she was using her influence to engage in a personal vendetta.

And if, playing Devil’s advocate here, if McCain wins then being the old guy he is, falls ill and she’s in charge, you’ll remember you heard it here first. She’s a huge mistake. HUGE. MONSTROUS. MISTAKE. Far, far too inexperienced. Hillary I could have accepted with reservations but this gal, no way. How the other party members have agreed to it is beyond me. I can’t help feeling there’s some hidden agenda we’re yet to find out about here.

And how the heck did McCain land two beauty queens anyway?

  7. I agree that she doesn’t have the experience to lead the country if McCain wins and anything happens to him. But then again, I look at Carter and Clinton, both former governors who ended up running the country. When Carter won, the same lack of foreign affairs experience was one of the main criticisms levied against him. Guess we’ll see what happens in November.
