Remember All That Talk of Riots?
By Nate • Dec 2nd, 2008 • Category: PoliticsDoes anyone else remember all of the talk of riots in the streets of inner-city America if Barack Obama lost the Presidential race? How it would be horrible and unnecessary and yet another sign that black people are quick to violence when wronged by “the man.” There were even commentators out there who said that even if Obama won, there would be riots, because that’s how his “supporters” celebrate, by rioting. Well, Obama won and neither of those things came to fruition. But something else did, and it came from the side that was trying to scare America with talk of black riots; racists.
According to an article in the LA Times, the KKK (yes, that KKK) has had a rise in membership and more that 200 race-based attacks have been recorded since election day. Surprise, surprise, surprise. Racism is still alive and well in America. Turns out it wasn’t just a figment of pollster’s imaginations.
Our President-elect has been hung in effigy, people have had crosses burned into their front lawns and groups of bitter racists have begun betting pools on when Obama will be assassinated. All of this on the heels of revelations that the Secret Service broke up two assassination attempts in the final months of the campaign and quashed many more before they had a chance to get started.
But, aside from that article in the LA Times, you probably haven’t heard too much about all of these goings-on. Odd, isn’t it? Odd that our press, who has been pathologically following around Obama for the past two years has yet to point out to the rest of the country that there is a growing pool of racists alive and well in our backyards. This same media that propagated the unfounded fear of potential riots and violence if Obama lost has almost completely forgotten to point out that the other side can be just as vile and reactionary as we were led to believe Obama’s supporters were.
I’m not saying that there is a right-wing media conspiracy, I’m just saying that they’re lazy. That means you, too, Anderson Cooper.
It’s something to think about over the next few months until the inauguration; that even though we as a country seem to be coalescing around a real adult who is preparing to take the moniker of President of the United States of America, there are a growing number of dissenters whose vehemence and vitriol know no bounds. It’s not even that these people are sore losers. That’s to be expected. In such a contentious race, more than few feelings are bound to get hurt along the way. But real grown-ups get over their hurt and disappointment and move on.
Too bad some of the losers can’t seem to grow up. Even former Florida governor and slightly brighter Bush sibling, Jeb Bush, has stated that the GOP should set up a “shadow government.” A shadow government? That’s the kind of crazy shit that you see in Austin Powers movies.
Like him or lump him, I think everyone should agree to withhold their judgement and setting up of shadow governments until after Obama has actually taken the oath of office and had a chance to do something. It only makes sense to wait until you have something to actually rebel against (and set up shadow governments to counter) to start rebelling. Right?
Nate is pretty sure Mark Twain said it best, "Humor is the great thing, the saving thing after all. The minute it crops up, all our hardnesses yield, all our irritations, and resentments flit away, and a sunny spirit takes their place."
