1) Beulah lives forever. They got me through 9/11 and both Bush terms. I still listen to Coast and Yoko every day. Best music of the first decade of the 21st century. For the 2nd decade:

2) Miles Kurosky lives! And records! And tours! It's all here: http://www.mileskurosky.com/

mine was a nearly identical experience to what you describe here; napster was a rad network for finding this kind of stuff. hot client, kazaa, mp3.com... a couple other fantastic repositories for the unconscionable distribution of royalty free material. could be we helped kill those bands at the time, but set them up for a pretty fantastic reunion tour in that decade you suggest may be required to gestate them into a palateable dish for the masses.

however, some bands did survive that initial wave of music piracy and, thus, flourished. foremost among them, i would mention death cab for cutie. HUGE SUCCESS! however, the real tragedy is that they suck, and beulah did not, so the outcome seems a bit inequitable; plus, dcfc made possible bands like the decemberists, and one can only stand so much of the douche malloy before being compelled to punch the first chubby, be-spectacled guitar player they encounter. or so i was quoted as saying on the police report...

beulah lived on, however, by being consumed and re-packaged as neutral milk hotel. that band has only experienced limited success as well, but has been a KEXP darling in seattle which tends to sustain them. i recall another band that landed in my lap during the beulah discovery days, by the name of the american analog set; a bit more relaxed, but fitting snugly into your definition of a band passed over by fame in favor of something more appealing to the lowest common denominator.

thanks for turning the floodlight onto this fantastic band!
